Painting what the inner eye sees

Ellen has been painting works in acrylic for over twenty years. Her inspirations are intuitive, guided by internal spiritual processes. Her paintings usually begin by playing with colors, shapes, and textures, not with drawings. Except for the occasional portrait, Ellen does not know the subject or content of the painting until receiving “messages” as she explores the feelings and effects of her initial shapes and colors. These “messages” may be hints from shapes that appear in colors, or connections with images and ideas encountered in memory, books, or online. Symbols and their underlying concepts will often appear, to be followed up by research and more intuition.

Ellen’s technique involves many thin layers of acrylic paint, creating multiple effects of depth and transparency.

Here is Ellen’s most recent large work.
